Federal Long Term Care Facility Program

Federal Long Term Care Facility Program

The federal government, in partnership with pharmacies, is operating a program open to all states to vaccinate staff and residents over 3 visits at Long Term Care Facilities.

  • Clinical Day 1:
    • Residents medically approved to be vaccinated offered Dose 1 of vaccine
    • A portion of staff is offered Dose 1 vaccine (Note: Recognizing the potential for workforce shortages resulting from possible vaccine side effects, the program provided for staggered administration of doses, such as approximately 1/3 – 1/2 of staff at a time, so not all staff members received vaccination on the same day).
  • Clinical Day 2:
    • Residents and staff who received Dose 1 on Clinical Day 1 receive Dose 2
    • Residents medically approved to be vaccinated who did not receive Dose 1 offered Dose 1
    • Remaining staff who did not receive Dose 1 on Clinical Day 1, and not yet vaccinated, offered Dose 1
  • Clinical Day 3
    • Residents and staff who received Dose 1 on Clinical Day 2 received Dose 2

Part A (LTCF-A): of this program includes:

  • Skilled Nursing Facilities

Part B (LTCF-B): of this program includes:

  • Assisted Living Facilities
  • Continuing care residential communities
  • Residential care communities/adult family homes
  • HUD 202 low income senior housing
  • Intermediate care facilities for individuals with development disabilities
  • Veteran's homes

*Doses are reserved for LTCF A & B based on certified bed count and estimated staff counts of facilities enrolled in the program. Enough doses are held in reserve to cover the entire staff and resident population. A portion of doses reserved are delivered to pharmacy clinical staff weekly to cover the doses required for the facilities scheduled for clinical days on a given week. New York State will re-allocate leftover doses to the state’s healthcare distribution program.

LTCF Progress:

Clinical Day 1 for the 611 Skilled Nursing Facilities enrolled in this program was completed Sunday, January 17.
